Did you hear about Pinterest’s big announcement this week?
They have introduced Place Pins, which Pinterest describes as “for the explorer in us all.” The concept is that Place Pins allow Pinterest users to map the things they love. It combines the beautiful imagery that we’ve all come to expect from Pinterest with the usefulness of a map online that can also be shared with friends. Place Pins include useful details like the address and phone number right on the Pin.
Need a visual to get the picture? Here is an example Place Pins board from Conde Nast Traveler that maps the top 100 hotels in the world. Image may be NSFW.

You’ll notice the numbers on the map that correspond to the hotel Pins on the board. When you click on one of the numbers, the corresponding Pin is highlighted, plus a box pops up with the hotel address and contact information. There’s also a button that says “Learn More” that you can click on to be redirected to the hotel’s website.
Planning Your Honeymoon with Pinterest
That’s the Place Pin basics. Now how do you use this information to plan your honeymoon? I’m guessing that you have a board on Pinterest called “My Honeymoon” (or something much more catchy), but the point is that you’re collecting inspiration for your dream honeymoon. I’m also going to guess that you’ve pinned a picture of a resort or place that looked very intriguing, but you have no idea the name of the place or how to find more information. Now, if that pin has been attached to a Place, you’ll have the name, contact info, and website at your fingertips. Talk about convenience!
I’m also extremely excited to use this new feature with the newly engaged couples that I work with in planning their honeymoons. I imagine myself creating a Place Board for a honeymoon in the planning stage, and including the resorts, tours, excursions, activities, and airports on the map. My honeymooning clients will be able to see at a glance their proposed trip itinerary, while browsing eye catching imagery through the accompanying Pins.
As with any new addition to a site like Pinterest, it will be interesting to see if any kinks arise with the Place pinning process. The usefulness will also be dependent on how quickly people catch on and start using the map feature. My hope is that soon the majority of travel, vacation, and honeymoon Pins on Pinterest will be accompanied by the mapping feature. Have you tried it out yet?
